How to Unclog a Sink
One of the most common problems you might face in your kitchen is clogging of the sink. The sink might be clogged due to the accumulation of waste or other items in its piping system. It is not a pleasant job trying to unclog the sink, especially if there is water accumulated on it. There are some clogs that might require you to hire an expert to help unclog it, but others do not. Below are some of the most effective ways on how to unclog a sink without calling your plumber.
Use boiling water
This is the simplest way you can unclog your sink. It is a cost-effective trick that can help unclog it fast. All you need to do is to boil water and put it in a kettle or any other container. Pour the hot water down the kitchen sink and give it time. In most cases, the hot water will help remove the clogging, but if it fails the first time, you can repeat the same process again.
Boiling water and salt
In case the use of boiling water alone does not help, you can try adding salt into it to help get rid of the stubborn clogs. You need a half cup of salt and a kettle of boiling water. Boil the water if you have water that is accumulated in the kitchen sink. Put the salt down the sink drain. Then, pour the boiling water down the kitchen sink and then wait. Repeat the whole process, if the water fails to drain it shows that the sink is still clogged.
Baking soda and vinegar
Use of vinegar and baking soda is another simple and cost-effective way to unclog your sink. You need one cup of baking soda, half a cup of salt and a kettle of boiling water. Mix the salt and the baking soda and pour the mixture down the drain. Allow the mixture to stay for almost two hours. Then, flush using the boiling water. If it fails, repeat the process again.
Plunger
If you try the above methods, but the clog is still a problem, or the sink still has standing water, you need to use a plunger. In case you have a double sink in your house, you need to seal the part that is clogged using a wet cloth or stopper. This helps create a tight seal. Place your plunger firmly over the sink drain and plunge many times. If you hear the suction clearing the clog, remove your plunger. After this, flush the skin drain using warm water.
Plumber snake
A plumber snake also referred to as an auger helps clear clogs that might be stuck down the sink drain. You should disassemble the pipe including the P-trap that runs under the sink. Try locating the stub pipe, which is the pipe that goes behind your cabinet wall. Put the snake inside the pipe until you feel it touching the clog. Move it back and forth until it breaks up the clog.
